The Lot-Continued

Imagine for a moment the pleasure I derive from living next door to such an enchanting plot of land.
It has stood like this for over a year, but somehow more and more garbage keeps piling up. I finally filed a complaint with the city about the illegal dumping and the weeds. Will they actually do something? I wish I could purchase the land and put it to real use.

The Flock, the Lot, and the Fate of the 'Hood

The beginnings of our Victory Garden and little flock of hens was in stark contrast to the demolition going on next door. I had high hopes that the land would be converted into a community garden, so imagine my disappointment when I discovered not one, but two skinnies (or row-houses as they are often called) were to be built on the lot.

I hoped that the property owner would see all the effort we had taken to make our yard and neighborhood a nice place before he considered building these skinnies. As luck (?) would have it, the economy took an even worse nose-dive and all construction was called off. As of today (April 11, 2009) construction has yet to take place next door, and I hope it never begins.

Meanwhile, our little flock was growing, and the original three enjoyed their first Big Day Out.

Penelope was (and still is) the trouble-maker. But this gives her character!

People are always surprised to see how well our cats and chickens get along!

Change is in the Air

That Spring, I remember being awakened on a regular basis to the sounds of a bulldozer smashing the foundation to the lot next door. The lot was the former site of a double-wide trailer which has been foreclosed. Once the owner discovered the home was in foreclosure, he proceeded to drive to the nearest bar, get extremely drunk and drive his car repeatedly into the corner of the house. As you may have guessed, the home was beyond repair and extremely damaged. This was in 2006. And the home sat on the lot like that for two years before the city did anything. This is why I suppose certain people call our neighbourhood 'The Flats'.

Anyway, when I woke up and saw the bulldozer going to work, I was thrilled! Goodbye, ugly lot, goodbye concrete foundation! Change is in the air!

Or so I thought.
